Dolly has always been one of Reese’s greatest inspirations in facing the challenges of being a woman trying to achieve greatness in her field. When Reese was a little girl, she even told her teacher once that she wanted to be Dolly Parton when she grew up! Reese created a talk show to highlight powerful and inspirational women in 2018, and Dolly was her very first guest.
Dolly Parton was born in 1946 to a very poor family in Tennessee. She grew up in a one-room cabin with her parents and 11 siblings. She began singing as a child, and achieved great success both as a performer and as a songwriter: she’s composed over 3,000 songs, including timeless classics such as “I Will Always Love You,” “9 to 5,” and “Jolene.” Her song “Coat of Many Colors” was adapted as a children’s book, and she founded a literacy program that sends free books to young children.
Reese Witherspoon was born in 1976 in New Orleans. She is best known for her role as Elle Woods, the main character of the comedy Legally Blonde, and won an Oscar for her portrayal of June Carter Cash in Walk the Line. In addition to her acting career, she founded a production company and actively supports a variety of philanthropic causes. She is a strong advocate for the advancement of women in producing, scriptwriting, and other largely male-dominated fields in Hollywood.
These two Southern-born superstars share a strong friendship and a deep mutual admiration for one another. They will probably be delighted to learn that they also share some common ancestors!
