In genealogy, the term second cousin refers to a familial relationship between two individuals who share a common set of great-grandparents. Specifically, a second cousin is the child of one's parent's first cousin. In other words, the grandparents of two second cousins are siblings, making their parents first cousins.
The concept of "removal" also applies to second cousins. If two individuals are second cousins once removed, this means that they are second cousins, but are of different generations.
