Patriot Research SystemPatriot Research System
The Patriot Research system is the database of patriot information and the grave registry. It is not a comprehensive list of every person who served in the American Revolution, nor does it indicate that a SAR membership application exists for every listed patriot. It contains several different searches, discussed below.

Patriot SearchPatriot Search
This database contains patriots who have already been approved by SAR. Search results will include all entries that match the search criteria entered. Any of the following search fields can be used:
- Patriot number
- Surname
- Given name
- Spouse name
- State of service
- Birth year
- Death year
- Cemetery name.

Descendant SearchDescendant Search
The descendant search searches the lineage information between applicants and patriots. This can be helpful in identifying shared generational data with another person. There are several search fields:
- Descendant surname (required)
- Descendant given name
- Descendant birth year
- Descendant death year
- Spouse name

The biography search is a database for patriot records for which biographies have been submitted. This search returns records matching all search criteria, so entering information in multiple fields limits the results. The available search fields are:
- Patriot Number
- Full or Partier Patriot Surname
- Patriot Given name
- Bio Entry Date (and newer)
- Author Name
- Author SAR Number
- Author Society (dropdown menu to select a state)
- Author Chapter (dropdown menu based on the Society selected above)
- Volunteer ID

This database is designed for searching specific SAR members. Information on that member and their patriot ancestors is displayed. Search fields include:
- National Member #
- Member Surname with a dropdown to select how exact the search is
- Given Name
- State Society

cemetery searchcemetery search
The cemetery search tool allows users to identify which cemeteries patriots are buried in. It is not a replacement for websites like Find a Grave. Volunteers manually link patriots to cemeteries. Search fields include:
- Cemetery Number
- Cemetery Name
- Cemetery Location.

Applying for membershipApplying for membership
If you have a direct ancestor who was a patriot of the Revolutionary War, you may be eligible for membership in the SAR. Once you have proven descent from a patriot, you need to find a local SAR contact to sponsor you. Then you can apply for membership. for more information, see https://www.sar.org/.
