Vinnytsia is a city in Ukraine. Vinnytsia is the administrative centre of Vinnytsia Oblast and is located on the Pivdennyi Buh River.

The area has been inhabited since ancient times. Scythian settlements have been found on the territory of Vinnytsia.

The year of foundation of Vinnytsia is considered to be 1363, as the year of the beginning of the construction of the fortress by Fedor Koriatovich. In 1431 the castle was burnt down by Crimean Tatars.

Since 1569 Vinnytsia was a part of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth.

According to the Treaty of Zboriv of 1649 Vinnytsia was included in the lands of the Zaporizhian army. Already in 1651 according to the Treaty of Bila Tserkva the whole Podillia was transferred to the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth.

As a result of the Second Partition of the Poland in 1793, Podillia was occupied by Russia, which it had been part of for a long time.
