Connecticut started systematically recording births on July 1, 1897, but many earlier records exist in church registries and county archives. Catholic and United Church of Christ churches, in particular, may have also maintained birth and baptismal records. The Connecticut Department of Public Health's State Vital Records Office manages these registries for since that date, which are restricted for 100 years before becoming public. The state’s old colonial history of farming and settlement plays a key role in genealogical research.
