The state of Tennessee began official, statewide registration of births in 1908. While this was the official start date, some larger cities like Nashville, Knoxville, Chattanooga, and Memphis had been keeping local birth records earlier, with records beginning in those cities in the late 1870s and 1880s. The state also began issuing delayed birth certificates in 1935.
